Last night at midnight, 2015’s very first Bout of Books Read-a-thon began. One week of reading more than you usually manage to, and hopefully kick-start a great year of reading!
Last time in August, which was also my first time participating, I didn’t do very well on the reading front, and actually ended up essentially abandoning the read-a-thon halfway through. But I did have a lot of fun following everyone and doing some challenges, and honestly, planning to do a week-long read-a-thon at the busiest time of year at your brand-new job was maybe not the brightest idea I’ve ever had…
This time around, the ladies behind the read-a-thon have purposely removed the goal post – for the very simple reason that they don’t want anyone to feel like they didn’t do enough or didn’t reach a good enough goal compared to others, and to put the focus solely on reading as much as you can and want to and just plain having fun.
I like that idea, and it matches very well with my own personal expectations going into this year’s first reading challenge. Basically, I’ve started work again this morning, and already know that I will not be able to spend every waking hour outside work reading no matter how much I’d love to.
So, my not-really-a-goal-goal is to:
1. Challenge myself to read more than I usually would (anything more than 2 books)
2. Have my shelves of hundreds of unread books, the Trusty Kindle and Dresden audio books at the ready
3. Not make a pre-set TBR-pile, but just read whatever I want.
4. And have fun.
That’s it. Pretty impressive, huh? I’m personally overwhelmed at my own ambition, but sometimes you just have to really put yourself to the test.
The read-a-thon runs from January 5th at 00.01 to January 11th at 23.59 in whatever your time zone is – as you know, I’m squarely in the middle of Europe and the CET timezone – and I plan to start the challenge this morning on the bus to work.
Want to join in too? Not to worry, signups are open all the way through Tuesday.
The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, January 5th and runs through Sunday, January 11th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 12 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog.
